Born in 1963, South Korea, Koo enrolled at Hanyang University as a film major, but he dropped out after his junior year.

He started his film career as an assistant director and then made his directorial debut with He asked me if I know Jita in 1997. Koo continued his directorial career with Mom' Way in 2004.

In 2010, he wrote a novel “My Messia (not yet published)”,whichreinterpreted Jesus Christ in Bible, hopingit turns into a movie someday.
