[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Lucky Romance" Episode 13 2016/07/06,
For a spell "Lucky Romance" continues to be sickeningly, adorably cute with its main romance. It's hard to hate a drama that's obsessed with its own sheer goofiness- I guess maybe because of the way it works in memory? That's the fun part of being together with a new person, after all. All the minor gestures which keep saying in as explicit possible terms "I like you and wish we could spend more time together". Soo-ho even brings that energy to exposing the not-so-secret relationship everyone has not been able to acknowledge at work,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Lucky Romance" Episode 10 2016/06/23,
One advantage of slow pacing is that when characters finally act dynamically to move the plot forward, it comes off as a genuine surprise. I was about as bewildered as Bonnie when apropos of nothing a love confession pops up, and had as little idea about what the proper response should be. Granted, her weirdly uncommunicative stance immediately afterwards was a little annoying, although Bonnie is so bad about communication in general that this isn't exactly a new character trait,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Mirror of the Witch" Episode 6 2016/05/28,
Soon-deuk-i (played by Dohee) is, for this episode anyway, the main character of "Mirror of the Witch". She's a schemer who, in between schemes, is friend to gisaeng Man-weol (played by Lee Cho-hee), who is being stymied in her romantic efforts by a disfigured face. You might be wondering what any of this has to do with Jun's revenge plan, Yeon-hee's seclusion, Hong-joo's dark magic, or King Seonjo's physical malady. There are relating plot threads. Unfortunately they aren't very convincing ones,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Lucky Romance" Episode 2 2016/05/26,
Now that the premise has been firmly established, it's easier to get a grip on Bonnie's character. She's very observant when it comes to spiritual matters- note the pantheon of holy images from radically different faiths. Yet when it comes to anything else in life Bonnie is aggressively unobservant to the point of being totally oblivious. Take pro tennis player Geon-wook (played by Lee Soo-hyuk). Most women would at least be a little curious as to why Lee Soo-hyuk is making faces at them but Bonnie is always in such a hurry to do nothing,...More
3 points to watch out for "Lucky Romance" 2016/05/24, Source,
The new MBC drama "Lucky Romance" released three points to watch out for. "Lucky Romance" is proud to say that it sets itself apart from other romantic comedies with a different story, direction and performance by the cast.
The third point to watch out for is Hwang Jung-eum's performance. She takes on the role of Bonnie Sim, a positive and cheerful character who falls for superstition. In the still cut of her, she's looking at the sky with a sad expression on her face,...More
"Maids" Jung Yoo-mi, what will she choose? 2015/03/22, Source, With only a few more episodes to go, Jung Yoo-mi who led two extremely different lives, is at the final turning point of her life.
JTBC "Maids" Gook In-yeob (Jung Yoo-mi) is the only daughter of a founding contributor family and lived a plentiful life after marrying Kim Eun-ki (Kim Dong-wook), the handsomest man in Hanyang. She had everything only the best could have and although she was immature, she wasn't hateful,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team" Episode 11 2014/07/18,
The title card gives away the ending. And while I'm fully assuming there's some sort of ridiculous gimmick involved to explain that this was all elaborately staged somehow, that's not enough to make the whiplash in "Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team" any more obnoxious. This is supposed to be a comedy. It has a silly premise, and for most of the drama they haven't even been dealing much with the question of how they got turned into old people. And now, at this of all times, we're supposed to be seriously worried about life and death situations?,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team" Episode 9 2014/07/04,
For the large part of this episode, it's unresolved as to whether Won-bin has actually turned traitor to the team or whether his actions at the previous cliffhanger were part of some more convoluted scheme. For most of the filler period until we finally get to the point that Won-bin's loyalties are cleared up once and for all, we're treated to jokes about Won-bin enjoying his young person body, mingled with hate and resentment toward all those people who treated him as a weird old guy before,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team" Episode 8 2014/06/27,
The drama appears to have given up on being an episodic mystery altogether here, as the conflict is built entirely around the nefarious forces that are conspiring against the team due their fateful agebending shenanigans from the first episode. It takes a moment to actually get to his point. First the good guys have to engage in customary silliness over their dumb ideas to try and acquire an important lead. Then there's an excursion at the water park. Then we finally get to the actual story,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team" Episode 6 2014/06/13,
If this drama's going to insist on making everything into a murder mystery, it at least manages to set the tone for the proceedings properly here by quickly introducing an element of silliness- a great deal of the invesigation revolves around a fortune teller. He's a pretty elaborately dressed one, too, and appears to have knowledge of events that should be impossible to know,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team" Episode 5 2014/06/06,
The tone takes an odd shift here- opening sequence notwithstanding, the first third of the episode doesn't actually deal with a criminal investigation at all, but rather the team's attempts to figure out who the spy is. As usual, they all quickly get so caught up in their imaginations that...I can't think of a way to finish that sentence, and neither can the drama. For all the goofiness these zany antics inspire there's not really any obvious consequences,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team" Episode 4 2014/05/30,
This episode the team is investigating a murder. Multiple murders, actually, which sullies the waters here right from the get-go. The essential conceit of this drama is that the investigation team, for all their comedic quirks and in spite of the fact that over half of them have been transformed into old men, are very good at their job. Yet here they're apparently so non-threatening that a murder unfolds right in front of them. That the murdered is eventually unveiled is besides the point. A team this good should be some kind of deterrant,...More

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team" Episode 3 2014/05/23,
Oddly enough I never for a minute got the impression that the ghost was actually real. Apparently the willing suspension of disbelief can tolerate magic water that turns young people into old people, but ghosts too? Well that's just crazy. Although it's possible Joon-hyeok is just making a very persuasive argument. Not really an argument, actually, more like he mocks everyone else on the team for even entertaining such a ridiculous idea.
"Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team" is not, at this point, about much in the way of serious investigation,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "Born to Sing" 2013/05/24,
Many colorful characters finds themselves involved with a famed Korean musical contest program. There's a slovenly, unkempt man attempting to get a hairdressing license, a crabby working woman in her sixties. An extremely shy and timid young woman, and an elderly grandfather living with his granddaughter. These characters have little to do with each other- but which will attain their dreams?
Well, it's a misleading way to frame the movie, to be honest. Yes, "Born to Sing" is, in fact, about a singing contest. It's the central plot device that defines all of its characters. But contrary to what one might expect, winning the contest is not actually the goal everyone is striving for here,...More
[HanCinema's Box Office Review] 2013.05.03 ~ 2013.05.05 2013/05/06,
Tony Stark may be under some psychological pressure in his third outing but his Korean fans continued to storm the cinemas in support. "Iron Man 3" once again dominated proceedings over this past weekend, adding 1,865,121 (75%) admissions and bringing its total tally now to almost six million. That places Marvel's blockbuster as the third highest grossing release in Korea for 2013; just behind "The Berlin File" (7.1 Million), which it will surely surpass in the coming week. There were only three new entries that made the top grade this past weekend: Lee Jong-pil's "The Singing Contest, a re-release of "Finding Nemo 3D", and the Japanese animation "One Stormy Night",...More
