"Homophobia" comments on how society treats love 2017/09/30, Source,
I'm pretty pleased to see "Homophobia" hitting screens later this year. Films that make strong social commentary can cause ripples in the social fabric and bring about change. It's not just art for art's sake, but art for a purpose. The creative world has a lot to give back that goes beyond enjoyment and I think that's what "Homophobia" does, even in the poster and trailer stages,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Dear Dictator" 2016/01/16,
On the northeastern rim of Seoul a sorry looking group of miserable young people cope with the fact that they have terrible lives. They don't live in the glitzy parts of Korea that get featured in marketing by the Ministry of Tourism. No, they live in a slum neighborhood with unreliable parents. There's no sanitation, lots of booze, hideous architecture, and what few employment opportunities there are manage to be pretty degrading. This is the South Korea your typical North Korean defector runs into- the place where no one has any money,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Speed" 2015/10/31,
Choo-won (played by Seo Jun-young), Goo-rim (played by Baek Sung-hyun), Dae-seong (played by Choi Tae-hwan), and Seo-won (played by Byun Joon-suk) are four friends of differing talents and temperaments with one common goal in life- gotta go fast. This is a generally good goal in life to have, given that they start the movie out running away from the cops and then spend the rest of it running away from other troublesome obstacles. Like vomit. Drug withdrawal. And vomit. An oppressively rapey school environment. And vomit. Seo-won's mortality. And also more vomit,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "Barbie" 2013/09/20,
It's difficult to frame the issues involved with international adoption without offending someone- I would imagine that any adopters of Korean children would be grossly offended by the portrait shown of the industry in this film. But then, that's the dirty little secret. It is in large part an industry, tied heavily to market incentives and engrossed in the world economy.
This is made all too clear from the beginning where we see that little girl Soon-Ja (played by Kim Ah-ron) has a deeply unsettling obsession with all things American. In a ramshackle house, where she lives with her older sister and mentally retarded father, chronically ill Soon-Ja would seem to be the ideal choice for a better life in the United States,...More

[HanCinema's Box Office Review] September and the Aftermath of the Summer Hits
2012/10/06, HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review (2012.09)
It took ten long weeks at the weekend box office to see off Choi Dong-hoon's "The Thieves", a monumental run that earned the film a recording-breaking 13 million admissions during that time. August was indeed the month its sales caught fire, and the month of September was just a glory lap as it gracefully bows out of the limelight and into the history books.
In addition to the re-writing of the history books, September showed a wavering level of enthusiasm for some of this month's foreign inclusions. Although, "The Bourne Legacy" was able to enter the second weekend on top, snatching 29.3% of the ticket sales in the process. This was the first time a foreign film had held the weekend number one since "The Dark Knight Rises" some seven weeks earlier. In fact, the shelf life for foreign films was on average 2~3 weeks in the top ten,...More
