[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Argon" Episode 6 2018/01/20,
I have been wondering when the "Argon" team would experience a greater crisis involving the massive responsibility of reporters in life and death matters, and the series has delivered. Something very dire happens and everyone has to handle the cost. Hye-rin is trying to make do with the decision forced on her and Yeon-hwa still struggles to find her place and her own voice. Meanwhile, Baek-jin makes a very important decision,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Argon" Episode 5 2018/01/19,
As the battle for the new HBC 9 o'clock news anchor becomes more and more ruthless, so do Yoo Myeong-ho's tricks. Yeon-hwa and Jong-tae go after yet another item while Geun-hwa prepares his exit. With everyone busy in the "Argon" team and a particularly nasty lawsuit targeting Kim Baek-jin, one team member is met with a very unfair and potentially career-ending decision outside of their control,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Argon" Episode 4 2018/01/06, "Argon" and the show within it of the same name have a surprise guest in this episode and they tackle some topics we do not often see in Korean drama, or rather often see painted in a very consistent and one-sided way. Sadly, the drama also throws a curve-ball at us with a certain character's health and this twists Baek-jin's arm into a decision that is necessary, but will only further infuriate his enemies,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Argon" Episode 3 2018/01/02,
With the secret plan between Baek-jin and Yeon-hwa to uncover the truth behind the Midtown Mall collapse hitting a slow point, it is time to get familiar with some other members of the "Argon" group. The two leads take on a case from Baek-jin's past that he must solve, the "ugly" and "old" lovebirds have an awkward meeting and the "Argon" underdog above Yeon-hwa gets a hefty dose of reality,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Argon" Episode 2 2017/12/25,
After a powerful start, "Argon" takes a little step back and an even more sombre look into how morality and principles are challenged in systems that rely on strict hierarchal rules, cronyism and a work culture of underhanded pleasantries. Yeon-hwa's own contract continues to be scrutinized, but it is our hero who has to make tough choices this time. The truth is important, but choosing strangers over loved ones is not easy,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Argon" Episode 1 2017/12/23, "Argon" is here to destroy any faith in mainstream journalism that you may have been holding onto while exploring workplace and hierarchy dynamics as well as the personal consequences and triumphs of a very demanding job. The series is fast-paced and so far focuses more on its leading man, but there are characters around with solid potential. Step into the daily grind of reporting,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Mystery Queen" 2017/09/23,
If you feel burned out by the influx of brooding detectives and copious amounts of violence that Korean drama has been experiencing recently, "Mystery Queen" might just be the break you need. The series will not take you too far from that crime solving sweet-spot and a bickering, yet perfectly compatible duo of crime fighters handling neighborhood villains will give you the fun and variety the genre sometimes lacks,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Preview] "Argon" 2017/09/02,
How does one find the truth in a world plagued by corruption, bad reporting, flimsy journalistic ethics and the distortion brought on by the need for speedy news and social media hype? Getting to the bottom of events is harder than ever in this day and age. "Argon" is the story of a group which fights against this.
Kim Baek-jin (Kim Joo-hyuk) is an anchor who only accepts facts. Lee Yeon-hwa (Chun Woo-hee) is a contract worker who wants to be a reporter. The two are part of the investigative show "Argon". The show prevents the distortion of the truth like the element prevents oxidation,...More
[Video] Highlight video reveals the tense investigations to come in "Argon" 2017/08/31, Source,
The four minutes of the new "Argon" highlight video dig into the main characters who are passionate, intense individuals with differing ways on how to go about things. Even from this brief glimpse, the cast is quite suited to the fast-paced journalism world. The question now becomes, what will this eight-episode drama do to distinguish itself from the currently airing "Falsify"? It seems that it will veer a bit more towards the idyllic path of journalism rather than the dark, knitty gritty of "Falsify",...More
[HanCinema's Drama First Look] "Mystery Queen" 2017/04/15,
Get ready for homely hairstyles and crime solving, because the "Mystery Queen" is here to beautifully combine both. The series spends its first four episodes introducing us to our main characters, their current situation as well as the ways in which the investigative part of the plot will progress. Two opinionated people form an unlikely frienemy pair and it is more glorious than I could have anticipated,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Preview] "Mystery Queen" 2017/04/02,
The concept of the "ajumma", the older married woman has had a rough times. While often a stereotype to be ridiculed and kept within traditional confines, it has begun taking more progressive forms as Korean drama evolves. In this case, our "Mystery Queen" will cook dinner, then arrest your sorry hide.
Yoo Seol-ok (Choi Kang-hee) is a woman who married early and had to give up on her dream of becoming a detective. Ha Won-seung (Kwon Sang-woo) is a detective who thinks with his fists. When Seol-ok becomes involved in a case, she gets another chance at her dream. The two characters do not get along, but they have to work together,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Mimi" Episode 2 2014/02/28,
I'm reasonably sure at this point that Min-woo is going crazy. Still not so clear on the ghosts. Yes, apparently there is more than one ghost. Don't expect much of an explanation of this, as "Mimi" appears determined to manage its story in terms of abstractions. In many ways this episode is a repeat of the first one. Min-woo has these rather bizarre dreams that seem to be stating something specific, then he goes off and wanders around a bunch of very clean voids for awhile.
Most dramas, most media really, are filled with extras,...More
