Idol groups are fighting fierce battles from the start of the new year by releasing new albums. Many idol groups including star idol groups such as TVXQ, Seungri from Big Bang, and JYJ, and newcomer groups such as MBLAQ, Secret, Dalmatian, Infinite, and Dalshabet will release new albums. Usually, singers do not release new albums in January and February after finishing their activities at the end of the last year, but this year will be different because star singers and new singers are all beginning to have showdowns from the beginning of the year. The team leader of the Music Business Department at Mnet Media said on January 2, "Singers tended to release new albums in September or October in the past, but recently they are actively performing all year round by releasing single albums and mini albums. Idol groups regardless of their popularity all think that they will be forgotten if they do not have activities, so they release new songs one after another without taking a long break"...More

MCST Aims to Export USD 13.3 Billion in the Culture & Tourism Field
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Yu In-chon) and the Korea Creative Content Agency (President & CEO Lee Jae-woong) held the presentation on 'Strategies to Increase the Export of Culture and Tourism' and the '2009 Korea Content Awards' on December 15 at 10am at the Sangam-dong Nuritkum Square.
The Presentation on 'Strategies to Increase the Export of Culture and Tourism (hereafter "Presentation")' was held under the supervision of Yu In-chon, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Heads of relevant organizations, including the Korea Creative Content Agency, Korea Tourism Organization (President Lee Charm), Korea Copyright Commission (Chairman Lee Bo-kyung) and Korea Film Council (Chairman Cho Hee-moon), and persons that represent the culture and tourism field were present at the presentation.
The presentation was made based on the recognition that it is important for Korea to develop its service industry so as to promote and improve its economy and the key to developing the service industry lies in the increase of export of culture and tourism.
The Bank of Korea announced in October that the product balance of Korea for the third quarter of this year recorded a surplus of USD 40 billion. On the other hand, the balance for the service industry recorded a deficit of over USD 10 billion for the same period.
As the culture and tourism field is a high-added value, future-oriented service industry, it is said that the culture and tourism field has the potential of becoming the next-generation export engine that can improve the balance of the service industry.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's strategies to promote the culture and tourism field as the next-generation export engine are summarized as follows: 1) establish an integrated system between organizations to support export, 2) increase the industrial infrastructure including finance and human resources, and 3) promote competitiveness of local content and tourism products.

They may only be four to five minutes long, but music videos are one of the easiest ways for singers to make a statement and express their individuality.
These videos are back in high demand, fueled by the popularity of the Korean Wave, or "hallyu", idol groups and YouTube. However, without a measure of experimentation, these videos will only remain as short commercials, rather than pieces of visual art.

'Mass Media Should Give Balance to Programming'
By Park Si-soo
It may not be an exaggeration to say that today's Korean pop charts are literally "occupied" by boy bands and girl groups such as the Wonder Girls and TVXQ, whose members are in their late teens and early 20s and dance to computerized hip-hop music.
This trend is making it harder than ever to watch sophisticated performances by middle-aged artists on the small screen particularly during primetime hours.
Lim Jin-mo, one of the country's most influential music critics, said the unbalanced exposure of singers to the media will undermine K-pop's international competitiveness and eventually devastate the country's breeding ground for young musical prodigies.
"The Korean music industry is extremely unbalanced", Lim said in an interview with The Korea Times. "Music producers, consumers and media are all liable for that.
"Producers try to make only money-making music and consumers are moved by songs produced in that fashion. Mass media positioning itself between the two have no choice but to be swayed by both".
The journalist-turned-music expert said putting this situation back on track is one of the key roles and original duties of music critics, but added there are few experts versed well enough in music to carry out the role and, even worse, their concern has mostly gone unheeded.
"The utmost value of today's music consumers in listening to music is `fun'. They no longer seek any serious messages or meanings from music as p...More

Approximately 23,000 aspiring singers from elementary school students to those in their early 20s flocked to the JYP Entertainment's talent search held in Seoul last month.
Only four were picked as JYP trainees, scheduled to go through the years-long training program before making their debut.
The record-high turnout in the audition came after the JYP trainee program gained the reputation of a machine producing K-pop idols, such as Wonder Girls and 2PM
Not only JYP, but also other entertainment businesses have seen a huge number of aspiring stars participating in their talent searches.
Despite the K-pops' phenomenal success in Asia, hallyu experts warn the popularity of Korean pop icons may be short-lived if the bad practices in the industry, which only benefit entertainment businesses while idols income is minimal, persists.
Who Are Trainees?
The phenomenal competition in the JYP audition raised a question about the new trainees ― who are they?
Industry experts say most of the aspiring singers usually spend several years in a training program, before making their debut.
No official definition about trainees has been made, partly because industry professionals have only just begun calling the aspiring singers under their star incubating programs by this name.
There is also no official data regarding how many young people in total across the entertainment industry here are in these programs now.
Han Soo-jung, a public relations manager at JYP Entertainment, told The Korea Times that seven 2PM
members, including former leader Jay Park
, spent an average of four years as trainees.
quit the boy band after he failed to weather harsh criticisms from some bloggers for what he wrote on My Space in 2005 and 2007 when he was a trainee, which was basically a private conversation shared with his online buddy.

Reigning girl group Girls' Generation
is ahead of the game, for now.
By Han Sang-hee
The local pop scene is sizzling with an array of girl groups, both old and new, and the competition is expected to heat up with each band presenting distinctive sounds, fashion and personalities.
Girls' Generation and the Wonder Girls have been the top girl groups for the past two years, but now their thrones are starting to look a bit shaky as new groups loaded with new tricks have appeared.
The nine-member Girls' Generation, of SM Entertainment, released their new album "Genie" in June, donning a marine and military style for their new look. They have been topping charts on Internet music Web sites and music programs aired on television.
Despite the success, the group's image has been smeared by several incidents: First there was the rumor regarding an album cover that depicted a Japanese fighter jet; then the discord between band members; seen from clips taken by fans during rehearsals; and finally a plagiarism dispute, an allegation which later turned out to be false.
The Wonder Girls, of JYP Entertainment, on the other hand, are busy in the United States as the opening act of the Jonas Brothers' U.S. tour. The group was originally scheduled for 13 concerts, but after the girls surprised both fans and organizers with their witty handling of a technical delay, they were offered to open the entire 45 concerts.

In the past, original soundtrack albums were just a little extra something that came with a television drama. Now, however, more viewers and drama makers are starting to realize their importance and potential.
One of the most popular drama soundtracks lately has been Baek Ji-young
's "Is Love a Sin?" for the SBS drama "Princess Ja Myung Go
", starring Jung Ryeo-won
and Park Min-young
. Her sad ballad was made for Jung's character Ja-myung, and although the drama is not faring well in the ratings, the song is soaring in popularity, topping Internet music charts.
"We started working on the original soundtrack a year before the actual airing of the drama. We were given the synopsis of the program, and after discussions with the producer, we managed to create music and songs that were a fit for the big budget period drama", Lee Sang-ho
, the music producer, told The Korea Times.

University student Kim did not start out as an avid fan of Korea's top male group TVXQ. In fact, she didn't like them at all.
"They were different and it was hard to understand what they were going for at first", the 19-year-old student, who wished to be identified by her last name, told The Korea Times.
But now, she is one of the group's biggest fans, flying out eagerly to Japan to watch them perform at a concert.
If you happen to find a crowd of excited teens grouped somewhere taking photos, reaching out for a glance with arms full of presents, it means a star is within the vicinity.
In the late '90s, fans were more humble and passive; they would memorize lyrics, follow dance moves and dress up like their favorite stars. But now, they have become more systemized and active, from publishing advertisements on daily newspapers to donating money under the name of their singers and actors.
"The Internet has helped a great deal in what fans are doing now. Agencies don't need to give out additional information as they used to in the past. Fans are quick and efficient, thanks to the Internet", Jung Sang-hee, from SM Entertainment, one of the biggest agencies here, nesting groups like Girls' Generation and TVXQ, said.
Back when the Internet was not yet popular among the young, fans would call up the "mail box number" through which agencies would offer schedules and other information about the stars, while the staff of official fan clubs would call up every member to inform them of an event or special schedule.
"TVXQ has an official fan site, but that's not the only place where you can get information. Now, fans make their own, which are sometimes more effective and convenient", Kim said.
For avid fans, taking a photo or getting an autograph is nothing special. These fans a...More

Boy band Big Bang seems to have it all, from loving fans, stylish fashion trends, easy-to-memorize songs and the members' distinctive characteristics. Now, the ambitious group is expanding their talents in other fields including movies, musicals and even television, but not under the team Big Bang. The members are going solo for the time being.
Other pop groups, including now disbanded g.o.d. and Fin.K.L, and the still running Shinhwa, Girls' Generation and Super Junior, have already pursued individual careers in the entertainment business. Big Bang, having colorful members who each hold their own specific talent, have joined this "trend" and started to heighten their individual image, which will hopefully contribute to the team as a whole.

When you've been a member of one of the country's longest-running boy bands for nearly a decade, it would be tempting to sit back and enjoy your success. But not if you're Lee Min-woo
who is not just known as member of the popular group Shinhwa, but also a solo singer, music producer, songwriter, actor and businessman.
This year, Lee started his own company M Rising Entertainment, released a third solo album, held successful solo concerts in Korea and Japan and produced songs for several artists.
In an interview with The Korea Times at his office in southern Seoul, Lee said he established his own company so he can produce the music that he wants to do and develop new talent. "It was a kind of independence for me. I wanted to do more music and have more concerts, and produce (music) for other singers", he said.

More and more Korean pop stars are making some serious noise all across Asia. Not to mention such established stars as BoA
, many young, up and coming singing and dancing talents are now targeting overseas markets from the very beginning, even before their debut here.
For one thing, this is a barometer showing the growing popularity of Korean pop musicians in the rest of Asia, which must be highly encouraging for both musicians and producers. Behind this are, however, ever-diminishing album sales in the local pop music industry.
According to the Music Industry Association of Korea, last year's best-selling album was Dongbangshingi's (TVXQ outside the country) third album "O Union", which sold 349,317 copies last year, beating its rival SG Wannabe whose third album, "Partner for Life", sold 311,642 copies throughout the year. Since 2001, when three albums including Kim Kun-mo's 7th album, "Kim Kun-mo #007 Another Days", and the now disbanded boy band G.O.D'.s fourth "Chapter 4" album became one-million-album sellers, the industry has failed to produce a single one since. What is worse is that, over the past five years, album sales have gradually been dwindling with no sign of recovery.
At the end of last month, SMH Music, one of the country's major album retailers based in Busan, closed its largest shop in Haeundae, the most trendy and upscale area of the southeastern p...More

, who is with JYP Entertainment, will advance to the U.S. market next year.
Music knows no boundaries. Even language is not a hindrance. Nowhere is this more apparent than the K-pop explosion throughout Asia.
K-pop music is already becoming one of Korea's top cultural exports to other Asian countries. Pop stars like BoA
, TVXQ and Shinhwa are overcoming the language barrier with their music, even drawing thousands of fans to their concerts in China, Japan and Southeast Asia.
Encouraged by K-pop's massive crossover success in Asia, Korean entertainment companies are making a big push in perhaps the world's biggest and most important market – the U.S.
In an unprecedented move, two of Korea's top entertainment companies JYP Entertainment and YG Entertainment
are set to launch their most popular male singers, Rain and Se7en
in the U.S. market next year.
Both singers have earned comparisons to superstars such as Justin Timberlake and Usher. They have already proven their popularity in Asia.
On Oct. 13, a preview of Rain's world tour concert attracted some 40,000 fans, with a fourth of the fans coming from all over Asia. Se7en
has also performed in sold-out concerts in Japan, and was undeniably the star attraction of the recent YG 10th Anniversary concert tour in the U.S. earlier this month.
