Korean actress Bae Doona won an award for best actress for her role in a Japanese film at the prestigious Japan Academy Prize, according to Bae's agency, Barunson Entertainment, Wednesday.

The 30-year old was nominated for her role in the film "Air Doll", and was one of five actresses given the award. The Japan Academy Prize will announce the winner of the Grand Prize at the award ceremony next year.

"It is the first time for a foreign actress, let alone a Korean actress, to receive an award at the Japan Academy Prize", her agency said.

The other four competitors include top actresses such as Haruka Ayase and Ryoko Hirosue.

"Air Doll" was Bae' second Japanese movie, following "Linda Linda Linda" in 2006. "Air Doll" was released in September, garnering fans and surprising critics with its storyline and excellent acting.

The film, directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, is about a human-sized inflatable doll that starts to feel emotions. The innocent doll explores the outside world and finds herself in love with a video rental shop clerk. Things take a turn when the doll accidently cuts her finger and the air inside her escapes. The movie was screened at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival this year.
