Korea Draws Attention at Cannes Festival

korea dAt 59th Cannes Film Festival, everyone was astonished when an unknown Korean movie entitled "The Host" was given a 2.3 million dollar contract for distribution to more than 10 European countries. The original scenario of the movie already has a deal with Japanese Happy Net Pictures for 4.7 million dollars. The movie has already netted 7 million dollars in international market even before it is released.

One associate from CineClickAsia, the managing company of 'The Host' stated, "The premier for the potential distributors was held twice, yet we couldn't accommodate all who were interested in the movie. People were waiting for more than an hour to see the movie and still couldn't get into the auditorium".

Film "The Host" Likely to Achieve Highest Export Amount

The film "The Host" directed by Bong Joon-ho has made the headlines as it is likely to win the highest-ever export amount in the history of Korean filmdom.

"The Host" received a favorable response as soon as it was shown at the 59th Cannes International Film Festival. According to an official from the film production agency ShowBox, "The Host" will be exported for $2.3 million to about ten countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia, including the U.S., Britain, Brazil and Argentina.

Simply based on the film's script, the agency has already signed an export contract with HappyNet Pictures of Japan for $4.7 million (including $3.2 million for the export of the film and $1.2 million for investment). The entrancing moving "3-Iron", the eleventh movie by Korean cinema powerhouse director Kim Ki-duk, is receiving rave reviews from film critics around the world.

According to CineClickAsia, the movies' overseas distributor, on January 18, the U.S. periodicals 'Reelview' and 'The Seattle Weekly' ranked "3-Iron" (the original title "Bin Jip" means "vacant houses") number four among in their list of last year's top ten movies.

The 8th Pusan Promotion Plan (PPP) wrapped up its three-day schedule yesterday by handing out awards in Pusan (Busan).

Among 33 official projects _ 27 PPP projects from 19 countries and six New Directors in Focus (NDIF) projects by promising Korean directors _ eight projects were announced at the closing ceremony at the Paradise Hotel in Haeundae.
