  • [HanCinema's Hall of Fame Review] "Snowpiercer": Dreaming of a Wicked Wonderland

    2014/04/05
In the Spotlight this Week: Bong Joon-ho's "Snowpiercer"... 2013 was a frantic and fascinating year for Korean cinema. In addition to the recording-breaking figures the domestic box office reported, it was a year that saw three of Korea's top directing talents venture into English-language films. First it was Kim Jee-woon that enticed Arnold Schwarzenegger to get back to bullets in "The Last Stand", Park Chan-wook took Wentworth Miller's sizzling debut script and summoned "Stoker", and then Bong Joon-ho adapted the French graphic novel "Le Transperceneige" and ran with it all the way to the bank. The results were three highly polished and enticing features that displayed the cinematic craftsmanship of three of Korea's most progressive and celebrated moviemakers. Within this talented trio, however, it was Bong Joon-ho's futuristic extravaganza "Snowpiercer" that gathered the most momentum, attracting more than 9.3 million viewers to its epically fantastical imagining of a not-so-distance dystopia,...More

A selection of shots from Bong Joon-ho's "Snowpiercer"... Bong Joon-ho's epic extravaganza attracted over 9.3 million to its platform when it departed last August. It was a stunning reception for Bong's first English-language film that saw the French-inspired adaptation become one of the highest grossing Korean films of all time. "Snowpiercer" is a gorgeous and twisted imagining of a not-so-distant dystopia, a world where the survival of the human race rides on frozen tracks and the frigid enforcement of status and station. Enjoy! [SPOILERS],...More
  • [HanCinema's Film Review] "Snowpiercer"

    2013/08/09
It's a common genre trope for the mean, fascist villains to go into eloquent speeches about how their distorted view of the world is the correct one and that the heroes, in their heroicism, are just futilely striking at cold, hard, reality. In "Snowpiercer" the cold hard reality is the fact that the train is the only place left on Earth that humans can still survive, everything outside having turned into a barren wasteland. What makes the villains in "Snowpiercer" so effective is that even though they know how important the train is, and have developed all sorts of elaborate equations and procedures built around this mathematical understanding of the world, and use all these facts as justifications for their actions, in reality they're all dogmatists,...More
  • [HanCinema's Film Talk] An Eye Towards "Snowpiercer"

    2013/07/13
"Snowpiercer" hits Korean cinemas August 1st and will make Bong Joon-ho the third Korean director to be showcasing a Hollywood feature this year. The film has an interesting and exciting cluster of Korean talent and studios on board - all of which have worked together successfully in the past. Here though I wanted to draw the eye through some of that prestigious Korean talent and showcase the keen 'eye' behind "Snowpiercer". The film stars Song Kang-ho, one of Korea's most prestigious acting talents who has been a huge performer in Bong's impressive filmography; mostly notably in "Memories of Murder" (2003) and, the highest grossing Korean film of all time, "The Host" (2006). One of "Snowpiercer"'s producers has also made fairly good use of the 46-year-old actor. Park Chan-wook continues to cast Song in his films, most recently "Day Trip" (2012), but he's also starred in "JSA - Joint Security Area" [2000], "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" (2002); "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (2005-cameo); and "Thirst" (2009),...More
