  • [HanCinema's Film Review] "Stray Dogs": A Cold, and Thrill-less, Misogynistic Mess

    2014/08/22
In the spotlight this week: Ha Won-joon's "Stray Dogs"... Having recently returned to Kang Woo-seok's stunning adaptation "Moss", I was eager to catch "Stray Dogs" (2014) and see how this debutant tackled this popular thriller setting and to what effect. Watching Ryoo dodge and decrypt Cheon's almost watertight grip on his small rural village was, indeed, thrilling, because we never really felt comfortable that our hero would escape with his life or the answer he sought. "Stray Dogs", however, is no "Moss", and despite its sound premise and sneaky set-ups, the film flopped (attracting less than 1.2K admissions earlier this year) and failed to fully adrenalize much of its plot as dreary exposition, manic misogyny, and poor character convictions put this dejected dog down before we even suspected it was sick,...More

A selection of stills from Ha Won-joon's "Stray Dogs" This debut thriller failed miserably back in January where it was brutally snuffed by the Korean public. Only 1, 144 bothered with Won-joon's thrill-less rural expedition, a sad sum indeed that speaks to the film's serious lack of appeal and appreciation for the very genre it was trying to associate itself with. It's a cynical, manically misogynistic, lacklustre non-event that should be avoided, if not forgotten all together,...More

What makes this movie particularly annoying is the perspective character, Yoon-joon (played by Kim Jeong-hoon). There's nothing especially grating about the person specifically or Kim Jeong-hoon's performance. The problem is that, by any reasonable definition, this movie is really about Jeong-in (played by Cha Ji-hun), the woman who actually has all the problems that need to be solved. Yoon-joon's appearance, first as an observer then as a rescuer, sours and makes a mockery of Jeong-in's entire situation,...More
