Late 40-Somethings Make up Biggest Chunk of Population

People born in 1971 account for the largest proportion of Korea's population.

According to data released by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on Tuesday, Korea's had a population of 51.78 million last year, up 0.2 percent from a year earlier. But the average number of people per household dropped from 2.43 to 2.39.
Some 944,179 people were born in 1971, increasing the average age by six months to 41.5 years. The average age of men was 40.4 years and that of women 42.7 because they live longer.
Sejong City was the youngest with an average age of 36.7 years since it is a new administrative center with more younger workers, while largely rural South Jeolla Province was the oldest at 45 years because young people tend to move to the city.
Gyeonggi Province saw the biggest population growth with an increase of 157,115 people, while Seoul saw the largest drop at 73,190 as people fled to the suburbs.
