Lee Sang-bong, the Designer that Links Old and New Generations

Lee Sang-bong is a designer who continuously strives to make something new out of something old. This has made him one of Korea's best known fashion designers and you may have seen his Hangul (Korean alpahbet) inspired designs.

While I speak and write Korean every day, it was a fresh surprise to see the characters of my own language adorning runway-worthy creations so beautifully.

Lee Sang-bong's success has made him a favorite designer among Korean celebrities. Famed figure skating gold metalist Kim Yuna, known for her grace and style almost as much as her skating, posed for Vogue magazine wearing one of Lee's designs.

Lee is known for being the bridge between Korean heritage and western culture. He spends a lot of his time in Europe finding inspirations and believes that embracing multiple cultures is important if more Korean designers are to succeed globally.

He is also very interested blending the talents of Korea's old-guard designers and those in the next generation. He thinks that more experienced designers can act as mentors while young designers can bring in fresh, innovative ideas, leading to greater development in the Korean fashion industry.

Below is a video of Lee Sang-bong's runway fashion show in the Louvre Museum in Paris. You can spot the beautiful clothes designed with Hangul.

About the author by Sophie Choi

Born in Korea and raised on three different continents, I have always been enthusiastic to share the uniqueness of Korean culture and design. On top of that, the advanced level of Korean technology makes me proud to call myself Korean and motivates me to spread technology related news to more people around the world. The list of things I like (and like to do) is endless: Shopping, Gummy jellies, Lilies... and it goes on
