Actress Song Hye-kyo has confirmed that she will be returning to the drama world with a new drama, "Boyfriend (Tentative title)". This will be a huge comeback for Song Hye-kyo since her last work in "Descendants of the Sun". Also, this will be her first drama since marrying.
Though this news should bring much excitement to fans, viewers are not openly welcoming her return for this drama. Though it hasn't been confirmed, it is highly presumable that actor Park Bo-gum will be playing the role of Song Hye-kyo's boyfriend in the drama.
The story of the drama is about a man and a woman are brought together by fate. The woman who seems to have it all and the man who doesn't have anything meet, and they must decide which is harder to do: to give up wealth and authority, or to give up an ordinary life.
So, the viewers have these concerns: First, Song Hye-kyo is much older than Park Bo-gum; second, she is married to Song Joong-ki; and third, Song Joong-ki and Park Bo-gum have a close, brother-like relationship.
Though Song Hye-kyo and Park Bo-gum would create such perfect visual as an on-screen couple and the drama would be flawless with their exceptional talents, viewers can't seem to get over their public image. Since their relationship is so well-known among K-drama fans, it would be too distracting to watch them act out a romance. Many netizens expressed their concerns saying how they won't be able to focus on the story.
In all honesty, we all know that Song Hye-kyo and Park Bo-gum are professionals and everything's a business here in the industry, but I do agree with most of the netizens saying how it would feel so awkward for me as a viewer, knowing that Park Bo-gum is basically Song Hye-kyo's brother-in-law. Even though Park Bo-gum and Song Joong-ki are not related, the public image of their brother-like friendship is too strong in my head.
Park Bo-gum is indeed the first-in-line on the casting, but he has not officially confirmed his appearance, so it may not even happen. But, if Song Hye-kyo and Park Bo-gum do act together in this new drama, I'm hoping that their brilliant acting skills will blow away our prejudice and captivate us into the birth of a new on-screen power couple.
