Korean films dominated the local box office over the long weekend, with four local works ranking among the top five.
During the Liberation Day holiday from Aug. 12 to Monday, "Arrow, The Ultimate Weapon" shot to the No. 1 spot with 1.35 million viewers, according to the Korean Film Council. Since opening in theaters Aug. 10, the period action flick has so far brought in 2 million admissions and continues to top the rankings. On Wednesday alone it attracted 160,000 viewers. It is the first Korean movie to attract such numbers at such a fast rate this year.
In second place was crime thriller "Blind" which drew 575,325 people over the break. The film had been seen by 758,430 moviegoers as of Tuesday. The U.S. animation, "The Smurfs" in 3D, made its debut in third by selling 401,604 tickets while local animation "Leafie, A Hen Into The Wild", brought in 346,085 viewers. So far some 1.4 million people have seen the latter, which is the first homegrown animation to bring in such box office figures.
Despite high expectations, the 3D creature film "Sector 7" attracted just 329,679 people during the long weekend to stop short at fifth place, while the action film "Quick" attracted 258,801 to come in sixth.
Meanwhile Hollywood's Spielberg-Favreau vehicle "Cowboys and Aliens" ranked seventh with over 177,944 moviegoers, while the Korean War film "The Front Line" drew in 168,023 million.
