Man Gets Life for Ordering Hit on Song Seon-mi's Husband

2018/04/12 Source

The Seoul Central District Court on Wednesday sentenced a man to life in prison for hiring a hit man to kill the husband of actress Song Seon-mi last year.

The man, surnamed Kwak, was found guilty of hiring a man to kill Go Woo-Seok in the office of Go's lawyer in southern Seoul in August last year.

The 28-year-old killer, surnamed Cho, initially told police that Go, who was mired in a financial dispute with relatives, promised to pay him W1 billion if he handed over information about the lawsuit, but only gave him W10 million, and he killed Go in a fit of rage (US$1=W1,068).

But prosecutors discovered that Cho had been paid by Kwak, Go's cousin, who had used a bogus contract in November 2016 to make it look as if he had inherited a W68 billion piece of real estate from his rich grandfather who lived in Japan. The grandfather found out and asked Go to call the police.

Kwak then turned to Cho, whom he had met at a Japanese language school, and promised him W2 billion to kill Go and offered to send him to the Philippines to lie low. Kwak also promised to take care of Cho's mother and sister and pay his legal fees.

Cho accepted and approached Go pretending to have information about the lawsuit but killed him during their appointment at the law firm.

The court said Kwak was motivated by the desire to "gain exclusive possession of his grandfather's wealth and remains unrepentant". It added the surviving family "are suffering indelible mental anguish".

Song, who watched the trial, wept when the sentence was pronounced. She left without making any comments to the press.

Kwak set expressionless when his sentence was read. Cho, the hit man, was sentenced to 22 years in prison last month.
