More People Treated for Sleep Disorders

More and more people are suffering from sleep disorders, according to data from the National Health Insurance Service.

The number of patients treated for sleep disorders rose 38 percent from 358,000 in 2012 to 494,000 in 2016. Over those five years, a total of 2.11 million patients were treated for the disorders, with some 1.25 million or 59 percent being women.

By age, 21.1 percent were in their 50s, followed by those in their 70s (18.2 percent), 60s (17.9 percent), and 40s (15.2 percent).

The medical costs also steadily rose from W35.9 billion in 2012 to W59.7 billion in 2016.

The figures were revealed by Minjoo Party lawmaker Ki Dong-min on Sunday.
