Movie Industry Plans Screen Quota Rally

2006/01/31 | 179 views | Permalink | Source

A group of filmmakers and movie industry figures are stepping up efforts to fight the government's planned cut in the domestic screen quota.

A committee on blocking a bilateral free trade pact with the U.S. and protecting the screen quota announced Tuesday that it would launch an all-night relay rally in Seoul for a week from Wednesday.

The committee added that moviemakers would hold a one-day boycott of production activities next Wednesday and stage a massive demonstration in Gwanghamun in central Seoul.

The move comes after Finance Minister Han Duck-soo announced last week that the government would halve its screen quota from July.

Han said the cut is needed to facilitate negotiations in the World Trade Organization and the nation's drive to conclude free trade agreements.

The screen quota system is intended to protect the domestic film industry by requiring theaters to allot 40 percent of their screening schedules to Korean films.
