[Orion's Daily Ramblings] Im Soo-hyang Courted for "My ID is Gangnam Beauty"

Societal expectations about gender roles and appearance are as timely a topic as ever, and upcoming webtoon-based drama "My ID is Gangnam Beauty" seems to dive right into their influence. Actress Im Soo-hyang has been offered the leading role in this story about rediscovering self-esteem through love.

"My ID is Gangnam Beauty" is about woman who undergoes plastic surgery after having been bullied due to her perceived ugly appearance. Heroine Kang Mi-rae attempts to heal her scars by changing her looks, but we all know that women can't win when it comes to beauty standards. Mi-rae is faced with more rejection, and is mocked as a "Gangnam monster"; a slur used for women who have done a lot of cosmetic work.

Mi-rae's love interest is a man named Kyeong-seok. Having been born handsome and privileged, Kyeong-seok pities Mi-rae for her cosmetic alteration, further hurting the heroine's feelings. When Kyeong-seok realizes his mistake and apologizes for it, Mi-rae opens up to him, and their romance begins to form.

This is the type of story which could go horribly wrong with lack of sensitivity and respect for the subject matter, but which could also be a wonderful tale about accepting oneself and learning to love through the support of positive bonds. I do find the premise quite promising, as body image is a complicated topic with no easy answers. I also find the male lead's trajectory encouraging. Hurray for partners who admit faults and apologize for them.

Not a lot is out about the drama, but Im Soo-hyang's agency has stated that the actress is reviewing the role positively, and we know that the production company is Group 8. Group 8 is behind dramas such as "Boys over Flowers", "A Witch's Romance", "Bring It On, Ghost", "Mrs. Cop" and more. "My ID is Gangnam Beauty" will air on jTBC.
