I've seen overly busy premises before, but actress Kang So-ra is being courted for one heck of a potentially enraging head-scratcher. The actress is currently reviewing an offer by romantic fantasy drama "Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter", which is based on a webtoon about a 699-year-old being waiting for a loved one. Now that's some ridiculous dedication. Wait until you read whom it's for.
If she accepts, Kang So-ra will be playing the titular fairy, Seon Ok-nam, who travels through the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties to find her mate. Now here's the real kicker, which is how Ok-nam came to have such a backstory. After " losing " her winged clothes while bathing, the fairy meets a woodcutter, who becomes her husband. When said woodcutter dies while falling off a cliff, the fairy is left waiting until he is reincarnated.
In the modern day, Ok-nam works as a barista, and while to most people she appears as a sweet older woman with a red flower, special individuals can see her young, unchanging appearance. As if things were not complicated enough for the heroine, she can also talk to plants. I'm not sure how this will be implemented, but if drama characters can talk to everything from stuffed toys to potatoes, talking to plants is perfectly doable.
The story is based on "The Fairy and the Woodcutter", which is highly problematic, because the woodcutter is the one who traps the fairy in the first place. Between deceit, kidnapping, trampling of consent and more, the Woodcutter is essentially a disgusting disappointment of a man, who should be pushed off that cliff a thousand times. Dramaland is no stranger to abusive men, of course, so I can see this fitting right in.
"Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter" will be produced by JS pictures, helmed by PD Kim Yoon-cheol ("Can We Love??", "Madame Antoine") and written by Yoo Kyung-sun. It is currently discussing a timeslot on tvN.
