Park Chan-wook's New Project Pre-sold to France

2007/11/06 | 286 views | Permalink | Source

Park Chan-wook once said he felt destined to make a vampire film ("Thirst"). The director of the famed 'vengeance trilogy' is busy developing precisely that, and buyers at the American Film Market (AFM) are excited. The project is titled Bakjwi in Korean and was formerly known as "Evil Live" in English, although a new title is now being sought. The story revolves around a priest who, while undergoing a strange medical experiment, is transformed into a bloodthirsty vampire.

Korea's CJ Entertainment closed presales deals for the film at AFM with both Wild Side of France and Russia's Maywin Media. PARK became a director of international renown when his 2004 feature "Old Boy" stunned audiences at Cannes, winning him the Grand Prize. PARK and his production company MOHO Film will begin shooting the new project in early spring of next year with a Korean release date expected in fall of 2008.

Commercial prospects look excellent with Korea's leading male actor Song Kang-ho ("The Host") in the main role. SONG will play the priest-turned-vampire whose nocturnal jaunts become complicated when he winds up in an affair with the wife of his childhood friend. As this is a Park Chan-wook film, expect an unconventional and provocative take on the vampire genre.

Meanwhile, at AFM, a busy CJ Ent. also sold Lee Chang-dong's "Secret Sunshine" to Maywin Media, horror mystery "Shadows in the Palace" to Germany's Splendid, romantic drama "Changing Partners" to Twin Co. Ltd of Japan, and Kim Ji-hoon's "May 18" to Mingyo of Australia.
