Plastic Bags to Be Phased out at Supermarkets

Use of plastic bags will be banned at large retailers nationwide starting next month in a bid to reduce waste and encourage the use of eco-friendly products.

The Environment Ministry said Wednesday supermarkets, department stores and other big outlets will no longer be able to hand out plastic bags to their customers from April 1, as the three-month grace period ends.

Violators will face a fine of up to W3 million (US$=1,136).
