Pusan Promotion Plan (PPP) plants seeds for future Asian cinema

2005/10/10 | 271 views | Permalink | Source

The 8th Pusan Promotion Plan (PPP) started its three-day schedule on Monday (Oct. 10) with a total of 33 official projects at Paradise Hotel in Haeundae.

This year, 27 PPP projects from 19 countries and six New Directors in Focus (NDIF) projects by promising young Korean directors will be introduced to potential investors.

Some 550 meetings between local and international directors and investors have been booked for this year's PPP, which runs Oct. 10-12, the organizing committee said.

Among 27 projects, which have been chosen out of some 150 applicants, South Korean director Kim Ki-duk has drawn keen attention with his third PPP project tentatively named "Beautiful". His two previous projects are "Address Unknown", and "The Bow". The new film will be about an extremely beautiful girl who gets raped and becomes too obsessed with her own beauty.

Proving the important role of the project market in Asian film industry, 15 former PPP projects proposed in 2002 were invited to screen at the 10th PIFF this year. They include this year's opening film "Three Times".

The Industry Center was set up on the 6th floor of the hotel with major production companies taking up 25 rooms as temporary offices. Some 11 Korean sales firms including CJ Entertainment and Showbox and 10 Asian companies, including Hong Kong's Golden Network, started promoting their films to potential investors.

A Taiwanese producer Lin Ithong said he came over to PPP with his completed feature film, "The Strait Story", based on the catastrophic boat sinking in the early 20th century.

"The film is about an artist who died during the accident in the World War II", he said. Lin suggested that investors pay attention to Taiwanese film's recent rise. "Usually we have made little more than 10 films, but last year, the number doubled to more than 40", he said.

Chien Li-fen, a producer from Taipei, said, from Tainwan alone, around 20 producers visit PPP, seeking lucrative deals with investors or distributors. "The Pusan festival is a good opportunity to find investors as well as to see the current trend of filmmaking", she said.

Meanwhile, the 5th Busan International Film Commission and Industry Showcase (BIFCOM), which aims to encourage international business partnerships among Asian post-production companies, film equipment firms, digital animation firms and rental services, was held on the second floor of the hotel for its three-day schedule.

This year, 58 participants from 15 countries, 33 film commissions and 25 companies related to film industry, participated in the event. Among the participants are Japan Film Commission Promotion Council, Singapore Film Commission and Hong Kong-based Props Co., Ltd., which specializes in providing replica guns, as well as several Korean animation firms.

Technical demonstrations and presentations during this year's BIFCOM will focus on animation based on advanced computer graphic technologies. Following the demonstrations by four companies including DG-Spot Inc., a 3D animation and FX company on Tuesday (Oct. 11), Japan's Digital Frontier, Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and Thailand's Kantana Animation will show off their advanced technologies to visitors on Wednesday.

Last year, 56 groups from 14 nations, participated in BIFCOM, seeing about 500 guests and 4,000 visitors.
