Short Films About Environment to Be Made

Three local directors are ready to get green. It won't, however, be for money.
Lee Young-jae, Song Il-gon and Jang Jin will take part in a short film project about the environment titled "1.3.6". Organized and funded by the Green Foundation, a non-governmental organization devoted to environmental issues, the film will be shown as the opening film for the First Green Film Festival, to take place in late October.
The festival's organizers said the numbers in the title refer to, among other things, the fact that South Korea is ranked 136th in a list of environmentally friendly countries, according the World Economic Forum.
"It would be great if our country would show as much interest in raising that number as they did in the quarterfinals of the World Cup", said Choi Yol, the foundation's executive secretary, at a news conference Tuesday.
Lee, who is best known for the 1999 film "Nae Maumui Punggum (The Harmonium in My Memory)", said he plans to make a film about the environmental conditions in his neighborhood. Song, whose "Komisup (Spider Forest)" will be released in theaters next month, will tell a story about a woman in Cheju Island, while Jang, director of the recent Romantic Comedy "Anun Yoja (Someone Special)", will revolve his short film around a romance between a country boy and a city girl.
The Green Film Festival will take place from Oct. 22 through 26 at three venues in Seoul.
