The drop was mainly due to a decline in the university's ratio of foreign professors and students. Singapore's Nanyang Technological University took the top spot for the first time.

Seoul National University ranked 11th. This is the first time it has dropped out of the top 10 since rankings were first made available in 2009.

Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) took the highest ranking among Korean universities at No. 4 (up from sixth last year), while Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) ranked 12th, Korea University 16th, Sungkyunkwan University 18th and Yonsei University 19th.

Among the six Korean universities in the top 20, KAIST and Sungkyunkwan were the only ones to see their rankings rise this year.

Nanyang Technological University has risen in the rankings every year since 2013, after falling to 17th in 2012.
