Some Special Accommodation to Make an Unforgettable Visit to Korea

In the past few years Seoul has experienced a boom in overseas tourists flocking to the city. Although new hotels are being constructed at a rapid rate to cater for this sudden influx of visitors, the demand for accommodation continues to outstrip supply.

Expanding on some of the ideas mentioned in our earlier article on the Smart Cloud Show, in this post we will look at alternative accommodation options available for to visitors to Korea, including staying in local people's homes and in traditional houses.

BnB Hero - Sharing empty rooms

Launched in May last year in the popular Seoul tourist district of Itaewon, BnB Hero connects tourists searching for accommodation with local residents who have empty rooms available in their houses or apartments.

In a period of just seven months, the company facilitated 10,000 nights of accommodation for around 5,000 tourists at 1,700 shared rooms nationwide, including 800 in Seoul.

That capacity, equivalent to more than thirty 50-room hotels, was created without the need for any new investment, indicating the potential for the sharing economy to alleviate the accommodation shortage in an age when Korea welcomes some 10 million overseas visitors yearly.

In Itaewon, for example, accommodation equivalent to the popular Hamilton Hotel (139 rooms) could be created cost-free by just 100 or so local residents sharing rooms.

BnB Hero doesn't benefit only travellers by giving them opportunity to experience authentic Korean culture in a real Korean home; it also benefits homeowners by allowing them to generate income from their unused rooms.

In order to address common concerns - such as language barriers and house cleaning - that local residents wanting share their empty rooms may have, the also company operates a Hero Mate System support network and coordinates with local municipalities nationwide.

Kozaza - Traditional Korean Hanok Stays

Kozaza offers visitors to Korea the opportunity to stay in Korean traditional houses known as Hanok. These precious traditional spaces have become widely known through the spread of the global Korean Wave.

Hankok Stays enable visitors from overseas to experience the traditional Korean lifestyle and culture. They are available at locations throughout Korea including Seoul's Bukchon Hanok Village and Jeonju's Hanok Village.

In addition to Hanok Stays, Kozaza's services include Temple Stays as well as accommodation in private houses, apartments, B&Bs and guesthouses. The sharing economy on which both BnB Hero and Kozaza have successfully based their business models is helping to reduce unnecessary construction and safeguard the global environment. And by promoting sharing and trust, it is also helping to build a brighter future for society.
