[Spoiler] "City Hunter" episode 20 recap : So goodbye... don't cry and smile....

2011/07/30 | Permalink

Why everything must have an ending? We all know and fully understand that nothing lasts forever. But sometimes it's just hard to say goodbye and let it go.

The same thing happens to this drama. We've been spoiled by the "City Hunter" for the last 2 months since its first episode on the 25th of May. Anyway, despite our sadness and unwillingness to face the ending, lets see how the City Hunter ends up. Will it end like any other typical of Korean drama, where the underdog live happily ever after with their sweethearts? Or, will it serve us with something fresh and unpredicted ending?

Here they are.

The scene starts with the death of Prosecutor Kim Yeong-joo (Lee Joon-hyuk). Shocking but true. Sorry Kim Yeong-joo fans. But it really is what happens. He was brutally killed by Mr. Cheon jae-man (Choi Jung-woo)'s henchmen. He died with blood streams down through his head and covers his face. But justice has been made for Prosecutor Kim. Jin-pyo (Kim Sang-joong) killed Mr. Cheon Jae-man with his own hands and blade. Not really for the sake of the Prosecutor he killed Mr. Cheon. But more for his absolute revenge. Lee Yun-seong (Lee Min-ho) who knows that his father was about to kill Mr. Cheon tries to block it but he just about minutes late coming to the place.

Lee Yun-seong, whose heart is full of justice and love, feels frustrated and angry to himself. Why he can't stop his father from killing another person. Yun-seong gets to the car and opens the sealed Secret Document. He slowly reads the details of the '1983 Sweep Mission' and he stares in disbelieve when he finds out that the Target number Five is nonetheless the President of South Korea and also his own biological father, President Choi Eung-chan (Chun Ho-jin). He's getting more desperate and hopeless.

Yun-seong comes to see Jin-pyo and questions him. Why Jin-pyo has to make him kill his own father on his own hands. Cruel!

Meanwhile, if we still remember Seo Yeong-hak (Choi Sang-hoon, the Target number 2), he finally reveals the truth. With his prison cloth, he fiercely says that the President is the one who planned and indeed the leader of the '1983 Sweep Mission'.

By the time Prosecutor Kim died, his father, Kim Jong-sik (Choi Il-hwa) awakes from his coma. Seems like Prosecutor Kim switches his life with his father's. The saddest scene in this last episode is probably when Soo-hee (Hwang Sun-hee) puts a spray of white flower and Kim Jong-sik cries in silence in front of his only son's photograph.

The President and many other fellows come to visit the Prosecutor for the last time. Lee Yun-seong is one of them. As he steps into the room, Investigator Jang Pil-jae (Choi Seong-ho) stops him and yells to the whole room that Yun-seong is the City Hunter. It raises a curiosity among the guests including the President.

The next day, the President's mind wanders and compiles all his memories with Yun-seong and realizes that Yun-seong is, indeed, the City Hunter…and his own son.

In the meantime, Jin-pyo's bodyguard, Kim Sang-kook (Jung Joon), tells Yun-seong some information regarding President's secret intention to unfairly pass the Private School Reform bill.

When the President has just done his dirty meeting with one politician, Yun-seong appears and bitterly asks whether it's true to achieve a 'great cause' even if the methods are wrong. The President confirms that his ways are right. Yun-seong leaves in disappointment and promises to make the President regrets his answer.

From his fake identity as a journalist, Yun-seong finds out that the President might have a diary or a record of his past election funds. Surprisingly, when Yun-seong is trying to find the record, it is the President himself who uncovers the place where the record was hidden and gives it to Yun-seong. The President asks why Yun-seong has to live like this. "Because of TRUST", Yun-seong says in a full confidence.

When Yun-seong is about to leave, out of the sudden the President says, "You're living like this, Father feels sorry".

Yun-seong then sends the 'Sweep Mission' files and the President's illegal funds record to some newspaper. It obviously creates a massive news and heaven for the journalists. It results with the impeachment of the President.

Nearing the end of the episode, to make the viewers get goosebumps, it is shown that Jin-pyo, Yun-seong, and Na-na (Park Min-young) are preparing their guns complete with their undoubtedly dangerous bullets.

The D-day comes. The last minutes before we have to say 'Sayonara, City Hunter'. Jin-pyo calls the President. As he comes in to the private room, the President isn't there. Instead, there's Yun-seong standing bravely. Face-to-face with his father that has raised him for 28 years. The father who has lost one of his leg for him. But also the same father who has created a killing weapon inside his soul.

They point their gun to each other, stare in silence.

Then Yun-seong suddenly points the gun towards his own head. He looks his father in the eyes and says, " I only want to live a happily life with father. But I know it's just a dream".

Out of a sudden, the President comes up with Na-na protecting in front of him with her gun pointing right to Jin-pyo. Jin-pyo switches his gun towards the President, pulls the trigger, and SHOOT! Yun-seong jumps to the front of the President. And guess? Yes, Yun-seong is shot, instead of his biological father. Yun-seong is shot in the shoulder. He collapses. Quickly Na-na shoots Jin-pyo. Right after, all the bodyguards burst into the room.

With his last strength, Jin-pyo yells and pleads that he is the City Hunter that they've been looking for. He does it for the sake of Yun-seong, so that Yun-seong can have an ordinarily normal life that he's been dreaming of. The last thing that a father can do for his only son is to embody his son's dream. Yun-seong is indeed the only person that Jin-pyo loves in the world. The bodyguards then shoot him from all different angles and bring him to death. His life ends with him holding hands with Yun-seong, whom can't believe of what is happening.

What a spectacular scene!

The storyline ends with Lee Kyeong-hee and ahjussi Bae Sik-jung heading to US. Then the 21 brave soldiers are finally brought to honor. Jin-pyo's revenge finally comes up with a satisfying end. What about the romance, our favourite part? Na-na meets Yun-seong in that lovely place and they possibly will have an everlasting happily ever after. THE END.

PS : GOODBYE "City Hunter"! But we surely will always keep you in our hearts.
