Take a Peek Inside an Average Korean Home

One of the best ways to get to know about how people in a different place live is by looking at an average person's home. Not the palacial houses in magazines where the kitchen sink costs more than a family car, but the kind of place where an ordinary middle class person lives. In this case, the ordinary middle-class person is me. That's right. I'm giving you a sneak peek inside my home. (Please don't ask for my address... that's just creepy.

Welcome to my living room. I'm a big fan of adding color to a room and for this apartment I chose the color red, coordinating the sofa with the painting above it and the giant LG air conditioner tucked into the back corner.

Here you can see a reverse angle, looking into the kitchen. Notice the enormous Samsung TV. Big TVs seem to be a fixture of almost every Korean home these days. Since taking this picture I've replaced this one with an even larger LG model. (I have to give equal opportunities to all companies, I suppose. One other thing you might notice is the phone on the wall, above the TV. This is actually an intercom with a small screen that shows me who is at my door before I let them in.

For the foodies out there, I hope my kitchen isn't too much of a disappointment. No oven, just a small toaster oven and a Samsung microwave. Full-size ovens have only recently come into vogue in Korea. That's not a dishwasher at the far end of the kitchen, it's actually a clothes washer, also from Samsung. If you're patient it will dry your clothes as well, but this uses too much electricity, so usually I hang my clothes.

Enclosed balconies are quite common in Korean homes and this is probably my favorite spot in my apartment. It's always nice to wake up in the morning and brush my teeth taking in an incredible view.

We won't be touring my bedroom - that's too personal - but I will show you the one thing in my apartment that I consider a bit of a luxury. Check out this shower. It has a total of eight nozzles to make sure I head off to Korea Advanced Technology and Design blog headquarters all clean and refreshed. Thanks for visiting my home. Next time bring food!
