Will tvN influence the drama ecosystem with one-episode dramas?

2017/08/27 | 306 views | Permalink | Source

The tvN one-episode drama project is slowly coming to life. tvN will be releasing 10 one-episode dramas starting this December. Winners of the O'PEN contest are lucky. O'PEN, which will cost about 13 billion won until 2020 (~18 million USD), is a project that fosters creators from planning and development, video production, programming, and business matching, including the recruitment of artists, in order to provide creative spaces and opportunities for drama and filmmakers.

"Drama Stage - The B Manager and the Love Letter", "The Attackers", "Not Played", "The Woman Who Makes The Last Meal", "Park's Secret Life", "Drama Stage - The Picnic Day", "The Day of the Tambourine", "Tasty Doenjang House", "Drama Stage - The History of Walking Upright", and more are the ten winners of the contest.

Currently, KBS has been broadcasting seasons of one-episode dramas since 2010. They've received good reviews for their solid, innovative storylines and drama elements. Although it is difficult programming and high production costs, the efforts are recognized through audience ratings, and the subject matter and quality make the endeavor worth it. A total of ten one-episode dramas are releasing beginning in September.

The one-episode drama, which is now hard to find, is now an investment for the future of the drama market, and serves as a gateway for new directors, writers, and actors. Following KBS, tvN also plans to find a new image as well as a talented writers and directors to provide opportunities for and allow them to grow and demonstrate their abilities.

Of course, not everyone looks at this positively. Above all, industry response to O'PEN, which is the basis of this one-episode drama project, was less optimistic. The copyright of the completed work belongs to the artist, not CJ. There is no disagreement about the good intention of fostering new artists and providing opportunities. However, there were a few concerns about the influence of CJ E & M, which has grown in the creative field into a behemoth in a many content hemispheres and platforms through its various subsidiaries.

Therefore, O'PEN's first one-episode drama achievement is focused on not only cleancut outcomes, but also overall work such as production process and distribution. It is expected that CJ E & M and tvN will show become a true drama creative kingdom.
