Yale Starts Korean Cinema Course

2006/04/25 Source

The spring 2006 semester will see the first Korean cinema course at Yale University. The course titled 'Korean Cinema after 1961' - will be an "exploration of Korean national cinema" by analyzing the selected films in the context of history, nationhood, gender, identity, and traditional culture.

Besides the study of cinematic representations, formal aspects like film style and cinematography - of Korean cinema will also be part of the curriculum and Yale prof. Seungja Choi told a reporter from Dynamic Korea that it seems that for a great part because of its film techniques Old Boy is highly anticipated among students.

The selected films represent different Korean periods and are from some of South Korea's most influential directors; including films from Shin Sang-ok, Park Kwang-soo, Im Kwon-taek and Park Chan-wook.

Prof. Choi's desire was to introduce modern Korean culture and society. Because of her interest in Korean cinema she did research on it for three years and took cinema courses at Yale to prepare for the 'Korean Cinema after 1961'course. She is a linguist, teaching at the East Asian Languages and Literatures department at Yale. Prof. Choi intends to further develop the Korean cinema course over the years.

Knowledge of the Korean language is not required for the course, but for advanced Korean language students there is an additional discussion section in Korean. The Korean cinema course is a collaboration between the East Asian Languages and Literatures department, and the Film Studies department at Yale.
