The Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) had a meeting at the Olympic Center in Seoul on Aug. 13 and announced that it chose the former Olympic table tennis champion Yoo Seung-min as Koreas candidate for a seat on the IOC Athletes Commission. Besides Yoo, other hopefuls included former Olympic weightlifting gold medalist Jang Mi-ran and ex-Olympic shooting champion Jin Jong-oh. Based on their English proficiency and past Olympic records, the committee named Yoo and Jin as the final hopefuls. Through discussions between KOC Chairman Kim Jeong-haeng and Moon Dae-sung, the current Korean member of the IOC Athletes Commission, Yoo was picked as the Korean candidate for the IOC membership.

IOC will review the candidates from countries around the world at the Candidate Recommendation Committee and Execution Committee. Final candidates will be selected two months before the opening of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. During the Olympics period, participating athletes will vote to select four new athlete members of the IOC commission. The members of the IOC Athletes Commission will work for enhancement of interests and rights of athletes and promotion of the Olympic spirit over the eight-year term. Yoo, nicknamed as table tennis prodigy, won the 2004 Athens Olympic gold in mens singles and a team bronze in 2008 Beijing Olympics and a team silver in 2012 London Olympics, having served as a mainstay of the Korean table tennis. His excellent language proficiency that he developed by participating in overseas competitions reportedly contributed to the nomination.
