Director Moon Byeong-geon's "Safe" won the Palme d'Or as the best short film at this year's Cannes Film Festival. It is the first time a Korean movie has grabbed the honor.

It was Moon's second time to attend the prestigious film fest. In 2011, his "Finis Operis" was invited to the International Critics' Weeks Shorts section.

Out of the nine contenders, "Safe" was considered to be the most socially concerned as it exposed the dark side of capitalism.

The 13-minute short is set in an illegal gambling den and revolves around a university student who works there on a part-time basis.
