Rock the Summer Heat With Music-Themed Films
By Lee Hyo-won
Staff Reporter
The movie theater always provides escapism, and can be a haven ― air-conditioned and entertaining ― from the sultry summer heat. But don't hide from the sun ― why not enjoy a break filled with cinema and live music by the lakeside? The 4th Jecheon International Music Film Festival (JIMFF) will take place Aug. 14-19 in the scenic city in North Chungcheong Province featuring 82 movies from 30 countries as well as 30 live concerts.
While very young, JIMFF has established a reputation as popular getaway, where one can enjoy a silent film with music by a live band by Chungpoong Lake. But more than just a feast for cineastes and audiophiles, the festival is the first of its kind in Korea and Asia, and is out to establish music movies as a recognizable genre like fantastic movies.

Music often plays a critical role in cinema ― by heightening the drama, creating an ...| More

According to CJ CGV's July report, Korean movies posted 47.4% of the market share, up 22.2% from the previous month.
Korean films hit rock bottom in terms of market share in May, posting 7.8%. However, CJ CGV attributed the recent market share hike to the the release of much-anticipated summer blockbusters like 'The Good, The Bad, The Weird' and 'Sunny' in the month of July.
Although the number of moviegoers was also generally low prior to July, the number rose 21.1% last month from June. ...| More

The number of movie-goers in July jumped more than 21 percent compared to the previous month to 17-and-a-half million.
Korean movies in particular accounted for half of total screenings nationwide last weekend.
That's a rebound from their record low of 7 percent in May.
Korean-style Western movie "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" is the box-office hit with 5-point-4 million viewers so far.
As for director Kwak Gyeong-taek's action flick "Eye for an Eye" more than a million people watched it in its opening week.
"Sunny" a movie set during the Vietnam War attracted more than 1-and-a-half million theater-goers.
[Interview : Lee Sangyong, Korean film investment team
CJ Entertainment] "It's true there used to be a tendency to rely on a movie's scale and cast. But the current trend shows what's the most important is the story".
The domestic industry had suffered lackluster popularity in the months leading up to July due to over-investment and poor production quality.

When you hit rock bottom, there's no other way but up.
After hitting a record low in May, Korean cinema is slowly emerging from the slump with a string of box office hits like "The Good, the Bad, the Weird". An alternative version of this "kimchi Western" ― the one that awed viewers at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival ― is now in theaters. The buoyant mood for homegrown flicks is expected to continue throughout the latter half of the year.
Since its release July, the spaghetti Western-inspired film starring three top actors drew in 5.17 million viewers, Barunson Film Division announced Sunday. This beats the ticket sales record set by "The Chaser", which sold 5.13 million, and continues the good standing of domestic flicks like June's "Public Enemy Returns".
It held the top box office ranking despite the screening of star-studded Hollywood imports like "Wanted". The $1.7 billion action flick, however, conceded its spot on the box off...| More

After LIM Soon-rye's "Forever the Moment", NA Hong-jin's "The Chaser", and KANG Woo-seok's "Public Enemy Returns" KIM Ji-woon's "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" is the fourth Korean film this year to surpass the 4 million spectators landmark.
CJ Entertainment announced that the kimchi western accumulated 4.13 million admissions in just eleven days. "Public Enemy Returns" was in 2008 the second fastest to reach the 4 million mark in 25 days.
2008 started with two unexpected block busters. In the sports drama "Forever the Moment", the Korean women handball team dramatically lost the final at the 2004 Athens Olympics; however they won the number one spot at the box office in early 2008. Korea had not much of a film history in sports dramas before.
An even bigger surprise was the sleeper hit "The Chaser". However, acclaim from critics and viewers for this dark thriller spread around and resulted in so far the most popular film in the running yearwith over 5 million admissions; an im...| More
