King of Pigs (돼지의 왕)

돼지의 왕 (Doae-ji-eui Wang)

Directed by Yeon Sang-ho (연상호)

Screenplay by

Animation

97min | Release date in South Korea :

Synopsis
"Hell, Two Lives", and "Love Is Protein" (from "Indie Anibox : Selma's Protein Coffee") director Yeon Sang-ho's first long animation, targeted to adults about the cruelty of reality and human nature.
Following on the success of "Leafie, A Hen Into The Wild", which broke the box office record for Korean animation, selling over 2 million tickets, "King of Pigs" offers yet another kind of meaningful film in Korean animation history. Director Yeon Sang-ho has worked on his own since 1998 and made this, his feature debut, with a budget of only $150,000. Unlike most commercial animated films, it targets strictly adults, being a cruel thriller about two middle school friends reunited 15 years after graduation. The film reveals a shocking story of bitter doom and gloom and the grim visual style goes with it. Voice actorsí performances and animation work are impressive. The film also casts a serious and critical view on social issues as well. It goes without saying that Pig characters are the personification of us in the modern society. (JEON Chanil)

  • [HanCinema's Film Review] "Wonderful Days" (aka "Sky Blue")

    2014/05/17,
In the Spotlight this Week: Kim Moon-saeng's "Wonderful Days"... Korean animations seem to embrace a cosmopolitan creational philosophy, bending and blending themes, styles and various aesthetics to arrive at exciting pastiches of exciting possibilities. In recent years, Korean cinephiles have been treated to an increase of intriguing efforts that have boosted the buzz around the South's potential for animatic awesomeness. Whether it be the lurid and family-friendly fables found in "Leafie, A Hen Into The Wild", the dark morality and cynicism of "King of Pigs" and "The Fake", or the fantastical adventures of "The Satellite Girl and Milk Cow", Korean animations continue to rise, challenge, and explore the form and function of Korea's animated aspirations,...More

  • [HanCinema's Hall of Fame] "King of Pigs"

    2013/11/23,
In the Spotlight this Week: "King of Pigs" by Yeon Sang-ho Animations are often branded as innocent dreams for young minds, vivid characters whose sugar coatings are as sweet as their own happy ever afters. This approach to the genre is the rough rule if commercial success is your emerald city, however most animated features contain subtle themes and references that fully-fledged filmgoers can quietly tapped into and enjoy. This matured shadow is often muted and obviously understated, but in "King of Pigs"(2011) Yeon Sang-ho reclaims some territory from the penguins and hens and opens up his own slaughterhouse filled with poisoned placebos and animated anarchism. In "King of Pigs", Yeon inverts the comforts of animation's anthropomorphic rule, and instead favours a disturbing zoomorphism that captures some serious social issues that dwell deep within Korea's concrete jungles,...More
