1.3 Explicit Scenes per Hour on Terrestrial TV

2009/03/09 Source

Evening programs on terrestrial channels air scenes containing naked flesh, sexual innuendo or physical contact about 1.26 times per hour, research indicates. A team led by Lee Jung-gyo, a professor at the School of Journalism and Communication at Kyung Hee University, analyzed programs aired by four terrestrial channels between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m. throughout 2007 and found that 116 out of 941 programs, or 12.3 percent, aired such scenes at least once.

SBS showed the most skin at 2.19 times per hour, followed by MBC with 1.68 times per hour, and KBS2 with 1.23 times per hour. KBS1 had the lowest frequency with 0.06 times per hour. KBS2 featured more scenes of sexual innuendo than any other channels.

Although news programs scored low overall, they did have a tendency to show the interiors of brothels and faces of prostitutes when reporting on red-light district crackdowns.

Programs aired during the weekends and on Thursday nights had the highest level of graphic language and body exposure. "TV soap operas are becoming increasingly sexually graphic, and we need more protection of children from such content", Lee claimed.
