▣ Hwangsanbol (2003)
Saturday at noon
Seoul Selection Bookstore
Set in the seventh century, when the Korean peninsula was split into three kingdoms ? Koguryo, Paekche and Silla ? the film "Hwangsanbol" is a sly look at the linguistic differences between the regions then and now. Working off the idea that the regional dialects of today stem from differences in the past, the comedy takes a legendary battle between Paekche and Silla and transforms it into an all-out verbal duel between the Kyongsang Province dialect (Silla) and the Cholla Province way of speech (Paekche). The film mines the sometimes subtle differences between the languages and dialects producing some very funny scenes. On DVD. Located near exit 2 of Kwanghwamun Station on subway line 5. Tickets: 3,000 won. Details: (02) 734-9565 or
