More people are turning to online streaming or other subscription services to watch films as they shun crowded places or social gatherings amid the coronavirus epidemic.

According to figures compiled by the Korean Film Council and released on Tuesday, some 1.33 million people visited movie theaters in March, while there were 1.35 million views through online streaming or other Internet-based platforms during the same period.

It is the first time that the number of people watching films at home surpasses those visiting movie theaters since relevant figures were first compiled in 2012.

But the trend was anticipated in late February, when the number of moviegoers started to drop rapidly after a surge in coronavirus cases here.

Last year, movie theaters accounted for 76.3 percent of the Korean film market.
