Most People Want Cash as Chuseok Gift

More Koreans would prefer cash gifts this Chuseok holiday, a straw poll suggests.

According to the poll of about 700 customers by online shopping mall TMON, the most popular gift people want to give is premium Korean beef with 28.5 percent. Next came health supplements (23.7 percent), and cash (17.7 percent).

But when asked what they would rather receive, cash ranked first with 26.3 percent. Adding cash vouchers and other equivalents, the proportion rises to a whopping 43.5 percent.

Next came fresh seasonal produce (25.7 percent) and health supplements (14.3 percent).

The vast majority or 84.6 percent said they will spend around W100,000 on Chuseok gifts, followed by between W30,000 and W50,000 (34.7 percent), W50,000-100,000 (31.2 percent), and a thrifty W10,000-30,000 (18.7 percent) (US$1=W1,173).

Respondents were allowed to give multiple answers, suggesting many are unsure how much they can afford.
