tvN dramas were at the top when it came to quality and issue last year. They did better than most groundwave dramas and entertainment shows even parodied them.
However, this year, things don't look that bright for tvN dramas. Those that boasted the best cast and crew all failed miserably so far.
Not every drama on tvN can be successful, although tvN has made a reputation for itself.
While tvN is in the slumps OCN is coming out with differential dramas made of fresh new sources and elements.
Until now, tvN has successfully dealt with sources that haven't been tried before on groundwave which aroused good response from the public. They were turning to more optional channels and cable for a variety of dramas. This is one of the reasons JTBC is doing so well and OCN is becoming the next best thing.
Groundwave has a permanent base of viewers but still, the young generation prefers 'fun' channels. Therefore, the 20s and 30s are turning to newer things and this eventually leads to viewing percentage and issue.
Some say tvN should reclaim its original appeal. It shouldn't focus on quality of the drama but how approachable it is to the viewers. It also needs to decide if its dramas are 'interesting' enough for the viewers.
Just because one element succeeded doesn't mean the next thing is going to hit it off. Dramas of similar genre will just bore the viewers.
Advertising the cast of super stars is now old. Take OCN "Tunnel - Drama" for example, despite criticism that it might be a low class drama, the outstanding performances of the 'not so famous' actors led to its success.
In addition, sources that aren't easy to approach can also backfire. "Circle" is a good quality drama but the 'time-slip' theme isn't so fun anymore.
Dramas will fail if not taken care of. tvN needs some rearranging to do as it's only been focusing on 'super stars', 'star directors' and 'star writers'. It's the characters that make up the drama, not the stars.
